Did you know that the Bottle Nose Dolphin is found all around the Australian coast? They are called the “Bottle Nose” after their short, stubby rostrums (beak). Dolphins can use tools such as sponges to protect their rostrum (beak) while foraging on the bottom of the ocean.
They are truely very intelligent mammals, they are not fish. Like every mammal, dolphins are warm blooded. Unlike fish, who breathe through gills, dolphins breathe air using lungs. Dolphins must make frequent trips to the surface of the water to catch a breath. Because they consciously breathe, dolphins have to shut down one hemisphere of their brains in order to stay alive while sleeping. While resting, the other half of the brain monitors what’s going in the environment and controls breathing functions.
Living in pods that can number a dozen or more, dolphins are very social mammals that communicate with squeaks, whistles, and clicks. Whether dolphins have language, as humans do, is a topic o great debate with scientists for decades now, but I believe they do have their own language.
As mammals, they have warm blood and nurse their young. Dolphins have more than one mate, and generally produce a single offspring that will stay with the mother for up to six years, depending on the species.
As they are mammals, dolphins are actually born with hair. A baby dolphin (calf) is born with whiskers on its upper jaw (rostrum) that fall out soon after birth.
Dolphins can make up to 1,000 clicking noises per second. These sounds travel underwater until they encounter objects, then the sounds bounce back to the dolphin, revealing details like the location, shape, and size of objects and targets. But the most interesting thing about the clicking noises they make is Dolphins don’t make any noises with their mouth – they don’t even have vocal cords. All their sounds come through the dolphin’s blowhole!
How does plastic affect marine life? Globally, 100,000 marine mammals die every year as a result of plastic pollution. This includes whales, dolphins, turtles porpoises, seals and sea lions. This is why at Love Bobbie Boutique we do not use plastics for creating handmade vegan soap and we do not wrap any of our products using plastics.
